Discover Edmonton’s Historic Treasures with the official Register and Inventory of Historic Resources dataset. Whether you’re a historian researching the past, a planner considering development impacts, or a resident interested in local heritage, this dataset is a valuable tool.

Key information includes resource names, locations (address and geographic coordinates), construction years, neighbourhood and ward details, and designation status (formally Designated on the Register or identified on the Inventory). This allows users to find specific sites, understand their context, and learn about their significance.

With geospatial insights derived from coordinates, users can explore the distribution, concentration, and historical layering of heritage resources across different neighbourhoods and wards. The dataset supports analysis of how heritage shapes the urban fabric and identifies areas rich in historical significance.

Statistics

The dataset includes a total of around 1,100 historic resources across Edmonton, offering a comprehensive look at the city’s architectural and cultural heritage. The majority—about 83%—are part of the Inventory of Historic Resources, with 17% formally designated as Municipal Historic Resources and 5% as Provincial Historic Resources.

Zoning Distribution

Historic resources are found in a wide range of zones, with nearly half located in Small Scale Residential areas, reflecting Edmonton’s early neighborhoods. Direct Development Control Provisions account for another 18%, and smaller portions fall within Medium Scale Residential, Mixed Use, and Parks and Services zones. Specialized zones like Heritage Areas and Fort Edmonton Park represent a small but important share of the total.

Construction Era Trends

Most historic buildings date back to the early 20th century. The 1910s are especially prominent, with nearly 40% of resources built during that decade. The 1920s and 1950s also stand out, contributing roughly 10–12% each. A small number of buildings date back to the 1800s, including structures from the 1880s and even the 1870s.

Neighbourhood Highlights

Historic buildings are especially concentrated in older neighborhoods like Glenora (12%), Westmount (10%), and Strathcona (9%). Other neighborhoods with strong heritage presence include Garneau, Downtown, Alberta Avenue, and Highlands.

Ward Distribution

Most resources are located in central wards such as O-day'min and papastew, which together account for over half of all entries. Wards like Métis and Nakota Isga also feature notable clusters, while outer areas have fewer historic designations.

Overall, this dataset offers rich insights into Edmonton’s heritage landscape. It highlights the preservation of early 20th-century architecture, the distribution of heritage resources across zones and neighborhoods, and the city’s efforts to maintain its historic character. It's a valuable resource for urban historians, planners, and community members invested in Edmonton’s cultural legacy.
