This dataset contains roughly 86,000 business licence records issued by the City of Edmonton, spanning more than a decade of licensing activity. It reflects a wide range of commercial, industrial, and service-oriented businesses operating throughout the city.

General business and construction-related licences dominate the dataset, indicating strong activity in contracting, development, and professional services. Retail, food services, and personal service businesses also form a significant portion of licences, underscoring Edmonton’s role as a regional commercial hub.

Licensing activity has increased substantially in recent years, with more than half of all records issued since 2021. This growth may reflect economic recovery, new development, and improved digital reporting processes. Spatially, licences cluster in Downtown Edmonton, major shopping centres, and industrial zones where commercial density is highest.

Business Categories

General business licences make up the largest share, accounting for roughly 17% of all records. General contractors follow at about 13%, with construction-related and labour services contributing another 10%. Office-based professional services, restaurants, and small retail stores each represent between 4–6%, showing a diverse mix of commercial activity across Edmonton. Beyond general and construction-related businesses, notable licence categories include rental accommodation, personal service shops, vehicle repair and sales, and logistics and delivery services. Food-related licences—including restaurants and food services—account for nearly 5% of all records, reflecting Edmonton’s active hospitality sector.

Top Businesses & Locations

While most businesses appear only once, a small number of organizations hold many licences. Capital Region Housing Corporation leads with just over 500 licences, followed by national chains such as Tim Hortons, Subway, and Circle K. High-volume addresses include large commercial and shopping complexes like West Edmonton Mall (8882 170 Street NW), Kingsway Garden Mall, and Londonderry Mall, each hosting hundreds of licensed businesses.

Temporal Trends

Licensing activity increases sharply in recent years, with 2024 alone accounting for more than 26% of all licences on record. 2021 and 2023 also stand out as high-activity years, together representing over 35% of licences. Earlier years show much lower volumes, suggesting either historical undercounting or significant growth in business registrations over time.

Geographic Distribution

Business licences are most concentrated in central and industrial areas. Downtown leads with just over 2,600 licences, followed by several industrial neighbourhoods such as Strathcona Industrial Park, Summerlea, and Parsons Industrial. At the ward level, O-day’min, Karhiio, and Nakota Isga collectively account for nearly 20% of all licensed businesses citywide.
